What does it take to drive an HGV professionally?

Becoming a professional lorry driver in the UK involves several stages, and the theory test is only the first. You need the LGV theory test (100 multiple-choice questions, 85 correct to pass, plus hazard perception at 67 out of 100), then Driver CPC Module 2 (case studies), the practical driving test, and Driver CPC Module 4 (a practical demonstration).

After qualifying you must complete 35 hours of periodic CPC training every five years to keep your Driver Qualification Card valid. Driving professionally without a valid DQC is an offence for both driver and operator.

Why this is worth doing

The UK has had a persistent shortage of qualified HGV drivers, and it remains one of the few well-paid skilled careers you can enter in a few months without a degree. The theory element is where most candidates stall — not because it is conceptually hard, but because it contains a large volume of specific numbers: hours limits, weight limits, rest periods and speed limits that simply have to be learned.

What this practice test covers

Thirty-two questions across the four areas that matter most: vehicle weights, dimensions and loading (including bridge strikes and load security), drivers’ hours and tachographs, vehicle safety, braking and coupling (air brakes, retarders, trailer procedures) and Driver CPC, documents and road safety.

How your score is interpreted

We apply the official 85% threshold to a 32-question test, so 27 correct is the equivalent pass mark:

30–32Strong pass · comfortably above the 85% threshold
27–29Pass · you would clear it, but with little margin
21–26Borderline · below the pass mark on the day
0–20Not ready · work through the official materials first

The section that fails most candidates

Drivers’ hours and tachographs is where most people lose marks, and it is pure memorisation: 4.5 hours driving before a 45-minute break, 9 hours daily driving (10 twice a week), 11 hours daily rest, 56 hours weekly driving, records kept for the current day plus 28 days. None of it is intuitive and all of it is examinable. Learn these numbers cold before anything else — and note that falsifying tachograph records is a criminal offence, not an administrative slip.

The safety point that matters most on the road

Left turns are the single most dangerous manoeuvre a lorry makes in urban areas, because cyclists and pedestrians disappear into the nearside blind spot. It is heavily examined for a reason, and it is the knowledge most likely to matter after you qualify.
