What is the DVSA theory test?

You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test. The car theory test has two parts taken in one sitting: 50 multiple-choice questions, where you need 43 correct — an 86% pass mark — and a hazard perception section of video clips, where you need 44 out of 75.

You must pass both parts in the same sitting. Passing one and failing the other means retaking the whole test, and the certificate is valid for two years: if you do not pass your practical within that window, you must sit the theory again.

What this practice test covers

Thirty-two questions across the four main areas of the DVSA question bank: alertness, attitude and safety (speed limits, stopping distances, alcohol, mobile phones), road and traffic signs (sign shapes and colours, road markings, reflective studs), vehicle safety, handling and loading (tyres, ABS, loading, economical driving) and incidents, documents and motorway rules.

The hazard perception part is video-based and cannot be reproduced here — but it is also the part more candidates fail, so practise it separately with official DVSA clips before your test.

How your score is interpreted

We apply the official 86% threshold to a 32-question test, so 28 correct is the equivalent pass mark:

30–32Strong pass · comfortably above the 86% threshold
28–29Pass · you would clear it, but with almost no margin
22–27Borderline · below the pass mark on the day
0–21Not ready · work through the Highway Code first

The topics that cost most marks

Two areas produce most failures. Stopping distances are pure memorisation and candidates consistently underestimate them — the overall stopping distance at 70 mph is 96 metres, roughly 24 car lengths. And sign shapes follow a logic worth learning once: circles give orders, triangles warn, rectangles inform. A red-bordered circle prohibits; a blue circle instructs. Learn that rule and a whole category of questions becomes straightforward.

Booking the official test

Book only through GOV.UK — the official fee is fixed, and there are many unofficial sites charging considerably more for the same booking. Bring your provisional licence, and arrive early: candidates are turned away for arriving late or without correct ID more often than for anything else.

Frequently asked questions

No. This is an independent practice test built by Quizinq for study purposes. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. The official test must be booked through GOV.UK.

You need 43 out of 50 multiple-choice questions — 86% — and 44 out of 75 on hazard perception. Both must be passed in the same sitting, so failing either means retaking the whole test.

Two years. If you have not passed your practical test within that time, you must sit the theory test again. That catches out a lot of learners who take a long break between the two.

It uses video clips where you click as hazards develop, which cannot be reproduced in a text-based test. Practise it with official DVSA clips — it is the part more candidates fail. See all our quizzes.

Yes, but you must wait three clear working days and pay the fee again. Preparing properly first is considerably cheaper.
