What is an aptitude test?

An aptitude test is a timed assessment that measures how well you reason with numbers, words, patterns and workplace situations. Employers use aptitude tests — often called psychometric tests — to sift large numbers of applicants before interview, from graduate schemes and consultancies to civil service and EPSO competitions.

Unlike an exam, there is nothing to revise. Aptitude tests measure trained reasoning skills, which is exactly why practice works: most candidates improve simply by learning the format and the question types.

Numerical reasoning test

The numerical reasoning section covers percentages, ratios, rates, currency and data interpretation. You are not tested on advanced maths — you are tested on whether you can work accurately and quickly with everyday business figures under time pressure.

Verbal reasoning test

The verbal reasoning section presents short passages and asks whether a statement is true, false or cannot be determined from the text, alongside vocabulary and analogy questions. The skill being measured is precise reading: judging what a passage actually proves rather than what it suggests.

Logical reasoning test

The logical reasoning section covers number and letter sequences, deduction and odd-one-out questions. It is closely related to the abstract and diagrammatic reasoning tests used at assessment centres, and rewards a systematic method over guesswork.

Situational judgement test (SJT)

The situational judgement test presents realistic workplace scenarios and asks which response would be most effective. There is no trick: employers use SJT to check whether your instincts on communication, ownership and escalation match how they want problems handled.

Where will you land?

27–32Exceptional — top band, graduate-scheme and assessment-centre standard
21–26Strong — above average, clears the sift at most employers
14–20Solid — around average, with clear room to push higher
0–13Developing — a baseline to build on with focused practice

Most people are surprised by which section lets them down. Answer all 32 questions honestly to see your score and your full breakdown across numerical, verbal, logical and situational judgement.

Aptitude Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Most employers sift somewhere around the top half of candidates. On this 32-question test, 21 or above puts you above average and 27 or above puts you in the top band. What counts as a pass depends entirely on the employer and the size of the applicant pool.

Most people finish the 32-question aptitude test in about 10 minutes. Real employer tests are strictly timed, so it is worth working at a steady pace rather than over-checking the early questions.
