What is the CSCS card test?
To get a CSCS card you must pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test. The operatives test has 50 questions in 45 minutes and you need 45 correct — a 90% pass mark, one of the toughest of any UK certification test. Without the card you will not get onto most construction sites in the UK.
There are different versions of the test for operatives, specialists and managers and professionals. This practice test covers the core knowledge common to all of them, which makes up the large majority of the operatives paper.
What this practice test covers
Thirty-two questions across the four main areas of the CITB syllabus: general responsibilities and accident prevention, health and welfare (COSHH, dust, noise, manual handling, vibration), safe working (working at height, electricity, excavations, plant and fire) and environment and specialist activities (asbestos, waste, pollution, PPE).
Behavioural case study questions on the real test are not multiple choice in the same way, but the underlying knowledge is identical — get the principles right here and those questions become straightforward.
How your score is interpreted
We apply the official 90% threshold to a 32-question test, so 29 correct is the equivalent pass mark:
Why the 90% pass mark matters
A 90% pass mark means you can only afford five wrong answers out of fifty. That is unusually strict, and it is deliberate: these questions cover the things that kill and seriously injure people on building sites. Most candidates who fail do so because they revised the topics they already knew and skipped the ones they did not — which is exactly what your section breakdown is designed to prevent.
Booking the official test
Book the official HS&E test through the CITB website and take it at a Pearson VUE test centre. Bring valid photo ID matching your booking. Once you have passed, you apply for the CSCS card that matches your qualifications and job role.
