What is the ASVAB?

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is the test used to determine eligibility for enlistment in the United States military and to match applicants to military jobs. The full battery has nine subtests, taken either on computer at a MEPS location or on paper.

What is the AFQT score?

The AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score is the number that decides whether you can enlist at all. It is calculated from only four of the nine ASVAB subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension are combined into Verbal Expression and counted twice, which is why reading and vocabulary matter more than most applicants expect.

The AFQT is reported as a percentile from 1 to 99 — a score of 60 means you performed as well as or better than 60% of a reference group. This practice test focuses on those four subtests, because they are the ones that decide whether you qualify.

Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)

Word problems using everyday arithmetic: rates, ratios, percentages, distance and cost. The maths itself is straightforward — the difficulty is translating a sentence into a calculation quickly. On the real test you get just over a minute per question.

Mathematics Knowledge (MK)

School-level maths: algebra, geometry, exponents, factoring and number properties. This is the most trainable section on the whole ASVAB, because the same formulas reappear on every form of the test.

Word Knowledge (WK)

Vocabulary, tested as synonyms and words in context. Because it feeds Verbal Expression, which is doubled in the AFQT formula, improving your vocabulary moves your AFQT faster than almost anything else.

Paragraph Comprehension (PC)

Short passages followed by questions on main idea, detail and inference. The skill being measured is precise reading: what the passage actually states, rather than what seems reasonable.

What ASVAB score do you need?

Minimum AFQT scores vary by branch and change with recruiting needs. As a general guide for applicants with a high school diploma: Army 31, Navy 31, Air Force 31, Marine Corps 32, Space Force 31 and Coast Guard 40. A higher AFQT does not just get you in — combined with your line scores, it decides which military jobs a recruiter can actually offer you. Always confirm current requirements with an official recruiter.

Where will you land?

28–32Category I–II — top tier, the widest choice of military jobs
22–27Category IIIA — solid, clears the minimum for every branch
15–21Category IIIB — likely eligible, but limited job options
0–14Below qualifying — not yet at the enlistment threshold

Most applicants are surprised by which subtest lets them down — it is usually maths, not reading. Answer all 32 questions to see your estimated AFQT category and your score in each of the four subtests.

ASVAB Practice Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Anything above 50 on the AFQT is above average, and 65 or higher puts you in the top categories with the widest choice of jobs. To simply qualify, most branches require at least 31 (32 for the Marines, 40 for the Coast Guard). Requirements change with recruiting needs, so confirm with a recruiter.

About 10 minutes for the 32 questions. The real ASVAB is considerably longer — the four AFQT subtests alone run to 105 questions and roughly 84 minutes on the paper version.

Yes, as many times as you like. The official ASVAB has waiting periods between retakes — typically one calendar month before a first retest — but there is no limit here, and repeated practice is the most reliable way to raise an AFQT score.

Taking the practice test is free. To unlock your full AFQT report and subtest breakdown, full access costs €1.99 for your first 7 days, then €27.88/month unless you cancel.
