What is the Duolingo English Test?
The Duolingo English Test (DET) is an online English proficiency exam accepted by more than 5,000 institutions worldwide. It takes about an hour, costs a fraction of IELTS or TOEFL, and can be taken from home at any time — which is why it has become the fastest-growing English test for university admissions.
It is adaptive: the questions get harder as you answer correctly and easier when you struggle, so the test finds your level quickly. Scores are reported on a scale from 10 to 160, in increments of 5.
What this practice test measures
This practice test focuses on the reading and language half of the exam — the part you can most reliably improve by studying. It covers four genuine DET task types: identifying real English words among invented ones, completing sentences, reading short passages for inference, and choosing grammatically correct sentences.
The real exam also includes speaking and writing tasks that cannot be replicated in a multiple-choice format. Your estimate here reflects your Literacy and Comprehension ability, which is what drives most of the overall score for the majority of test takers.
How your estimated score works
Your number of correct answers is mapped onto the official 10–160 DET scale:
Who accepts the Duolingo English Test?
Universities across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Australia and much of Europe now accept the DET, though minimum scores vary. A typical undergraduate requirement is 105–120; competitive and postgraduate programmes often ask for 120–130. Always check the published requirement for your specific course before booking.
How to prepare
Vocabulary breadth is the single highest-return area for most candidates, because the Read and Select task is pure recognition and appears throughout the exam. After that, work on reading speed and on the grammar structures that appear at the top of the adaptive ladder. Take this practice test, read your section report, and study the weakest section first.

No. This is an independent practice test built by Quizinq. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Duolingo, Inc., and Duolingo English Test is a trademark of Duolingo, Inc. To take the official test you must book it through Duolingo directly.
The estimate is based on your accuracy across four task types that mirror the real exam, mapped onto the published DET score scale. It is a useful indication of the band you are currently working in, but the official test is adaptive and also measures speaking and writing, so your official score can differ.
About 15 minutes. There is no time limit on individual questions, so you can work at your own pace — though answering quickly is good practice for the real thing.

Yes, as many times as you like. Most people retake it every couple of weeks while preparing, to check that their score is actually moving.
