What is IELTS?
IELTS is the most widely recognised English proficiency test in the world, accepted by more than 11,000 organisations across 140 countries. It has four papers — Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking — and is scored on a nine-band scale in half-band increments. Your overall band is the average of the four.
There are two versions. IELTS Academic is for university admission and professional registration; IELTS General Training is for migration and work. The Listening and Speaking papers are identical in both; Reading and Writing differ.
What this practice test covers
This practice test focuses on IELTS Reading and written English comprehension, the skills with objectively correct answers that you can practise and mark on your own. It covers the task types that cause the most trouble: True/False/Not Given, matching headings, sentence and detail completion, and questions that turn on a writer’s attitude rather than a stated fact.
Listening, Writing and Speaking are not included: Listening needs audio, and Writing and Speaking need a trained examiner to assess. Most candidates find Reading is where a band can be gained fastest through technique alone, which is exactly what this test is designed to sharpen.
How your band estimate works
Your score is mapped onto the IELTS nine-band scale:
What band do you actually need?
Most UK and Australian undergraduate courses ask for an overall 6.0 or 6.5 with no component below 5.5 or 6.0. Postgraduate courses usually ask for 6.5 or 7.0. Professional registration is stricter: nursing and medicine commonly require 7.0 in every component, and legal practice sometimes 7.5. Because most institutions set a minimum per component, a strong Reading score cannot rescue a weak Listening one — which is why the section breakdown matters more than the overall figure.
How to improve fastest
For Reading, the single biggest gain is learning to distinguish False from Not Given — candidates lose more marks there than anywhere else. For vocabulary and inference questions, it is context: using the surrounding sentence to work out meaning and attitude rather than relying on memory. Both are technique, and both improve within weeks.
Frequently asked questions
No. This is an independent practice test built by Quizinq for study purposes. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia or Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The official test must be booked through an approved test centre.
Both require a trained examiner to assess against detailed descriptors, so they cannot be marked automatically. Reading and Listening have objectively correct answers, and for most candidates they are also where a band can be gained fastest.
It is indicative. Your accuracy across these task types maps reasonably onto the official band scale, but the real test is longer, timed, and includes Writing and Speaking in your overall band. Treat it as a guide to your current level, not a prediction.
Academic for university study and most professional registration; General Training for migration and work. The Listening paper is the same in both. Check exactly what your institution or visa route requires before booking. See all our quizzes.
Test results are normally considered valid for two years. Many institutions apply their own rules, so check the requirement for your specific application.
