What is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic is a computer-based English test accepted for study and migration in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and thousands of institutions worldwide. It takes about two hours, is entirely computer-scored, and results usually arrive within 48 hours — which is why it has become the fastest-growing alternative to IELTS.
Scores are reported on the Global Scale of English, from 10 to 90. You receive an overall score plus communicative skills scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening, and enabling skills scores for grammar, vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation and fluency.
What this practice test covers
This practice test focuses on the parts of PTE that can be objectively marked without a microphone: reading fill-in-the-blanks, reading comprehension and paragraph ordering, vocabulary and grammar, and academic grammar and vocabulary. Together these drive the Reading, Listening and enabling-skill scores that make up most of your overall result.
One feature of PTE deserves special attention: several task types use negative marking, so guessing on multiple-answer questions actively costs you points. Knowing when to answer and when to leave a box unticked is worth several points on its own.
How your estimated score works
Your accuracy is mapped onto the official 10–90 PTE scale:
What score do you actually need?
Most undergraduate courses ask for 50–58, and postgraduate courses for 58–65. Australian skilled migration awards points at 50, 65 and 79, and the jump from 65 to 79 is worth a substantial number of points — which makes 79 the single most sought-after PTE score. Professional registration in healthcare typically requires 65 in every communicative skill.
How to improve fastest
PTE rewards familiarity with the format more than almost any other English test, because it is machine-scored against predictable criteria. Learn the negative-marking rules first, then drill fill-in-the-blanks, which test collocation rather than comprehension and improve quickly with focused vocabulary work. Leave the speaking tasks until you have a microphone and can record yourself.
Frequently asked questions
No. This is an independent practice test built by Quizinq for study purposes. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Pearson. The official test must be booked through the Pearson PTE website and taken at an approved test centre.
Speaking tasks need a microphone and are scored by Pearson’s automated engine against pronunciation and fluency criteria that cannot be replicated in a multiple-choice format. The reading and language questions here still drive most of your overall score.
On several task types — including multiple-choice with multiple answers and Highlight Incorrect Words — an incorrect selection cancels out a correct one. Guessing therefore costs you marks, unlike in IELTS where wrong answers are simply not credited.
Usually within 48 hours, and often faster. That speed is the main practical advantage over IELTS for applicants working to a deadline. See all our quizzes.
